Fluoridated St. Louis Needs New Dental School

St. Louis Missouri has been fluoridated since 1955 and plans $23 million dental school clinic in St. Louis

Fluoridation was projected to put dentists out of business. But
"We definitely recognize there is a huge unmet need for dental schools and oral health care in the [St. Louis] area," Dr. Chris Halliday, inaugural dean of the dental school, said.

The school expects to hire 61 staff members at the clinic. The average salary of the clinic staffers will be $32,000, according to Phelps. Grace Hill will run the clinic's daily operations with plans to bring in about 10 dentists to work at the clinic, according to Phelps.

Tooth or consequences: The costs of poor dental fitness - amednews.com

Tooth or consequences: The costs of poor dental fitness - amednews.com: A few years ago, an extremely sick, 2-year-old boy came to the [fluoridated] Houston office of pediatrician Ray Wagner, MD, with a 105-degree temperature. The illness, which required five days of hospitalization and a course of intravenous antibiotics, got its start in an infected tooth; which, in turn, resulted from poor dental hygiene and a lack of dental care. Dr. Wagner, who was then an assistant professor at the University of Texas Medical School, decided to use this case as a hook for an educational session on oral health.

Fluoridation Fails Chicago Kids

In fluoridated Chicago, 64 percent of third graders have experienced cavities and 36 percent have untreated cavities. Chicago is home to organized dentistry which spends millions of dollars and loads of political clout forcing fluoride into more people via the water supply when they could be using that money to fill the cavities of the children in their neighborhood. http://www.bridgetohealthysmiles.com/ISDSBrochure.pdf

7NEWS - A crowning achievement for kids' dental care - Staying Healthy Story

Demand for crowns is not likely to ebb. Despite the proliferation of fluoride and dental sealants over the years, tooth decay among children has proved a stubborn foe.
As recently as 2007, a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention report warned that tooth decay in baby teeth was increasing among children ages 2 to 5 years.
Tooth decay "remains a problem for some racial and ethnic groups, many of whom have more treated and untreated tooth decay compared with other groups," said Bruce Dye, an epidemiologist and lead author of the 2007 CDC report. In a separate report released in May 2012, Dye said 20 percent of American children ages 5 to 11 had untreated cavities.

Tooth decay - the number one threat to kids’ health

Milwaukee Community Journal WISCONSIN'S LARGEST AFRICAN AMERICAN NEWSPAPER The number one threat to kids’ health: cavities have been on the rise in all income groups, as I’ve reported previously. In fact, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention states that tooth decay affects over one-fourth of two to five year-old children, and half of kids age 12 to 15.

How bad is the problem?

“Dental decay is the most common chronic childhood disease with more than 16 million kids suffering from untreated tooth decay in the U.S.,” Dental Trade Alliance Foundation CEO Gary Price said in a press release. He further added that kids miss more than 50 million hours of school (and parents lose 25 million hours of work) each week.

Dental issues have big effects in poor kids | The Columbus Dispatch

Dental issues have big effects in poor kids | The Columbus Dispatch: “Poverty is the underlying cause of both.”

It boils down to lack of access to fresh, healthful foods and to basic dental care.In [fluoridated] Columbus, as in other cities, the areas where many people live in poverty “don’t have large grocery stores. They have quick stops,” said Dr. Dennis McTigue, professor of pediatric dentistry at Ohio State University and spokesman for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.“Those places tend to sell processed, high-fat and high-carbohydrate food. When accessing healthy food is difficult, families end up eating the high-carb foods that cause obesity and cavities.”

Stopping the decay; Too many people in Appalachia suffer dental woes that start early and can last a lifetime - DentistryIQ

Ohio is 88% fluoridated. Yet, Too many people in Appalachia suffer dental woes that start early and can last a lifetime - DentistryIQ: "Some of the adult patients at the Southeastern Ohio Dental Clinic didn't see a dentist once during childhood. Children as young as 5 have had to have all their baby teeth pulled.

Patients in their 20s sometimes need dentures.

Often, the only thing that brings them there is pain that won't relent and keeps them from sleeping or working."

Fluoride Not Stopping Seattle's Cavity Crisis

Dental Practice Management: "We see a steady stream of patients coming into the emergency department with dental problems, most of which are not true emergencies," Brian Livingston, MD, vice president of medical affairs for Swedish Medical Center's First Hill campus in [fluoridated] Seattle, told the WDSF. "We can try to alleviate the pain, but we aren't dentists. We can't address the underlying problem or provide the vital preventive care that would significantly decrease the number of emergency dental visits."

Since the 2011 Medicaid cuts, "we have provided much more emergency care," added Sarah Vander Beek, DMD, who treats low-income patients at Neighborcare Health's Rainier Beach Medical and Dental Clinic in South Seattle. "Unfortunately, we are treating dental disease when it's more advanced, complex, and expensive. What could have been a filling is now an extraction."

“One of the most common calls I get ... comes from seniors who say, ‘I can't get dentures. How am I supposed to eat?’ ”

Las Vegas Kids: lots of cavities despite fluoridation

Las Vegas, Nevada is fluoridated:

Wynn Elementary reaches kids' minds, and its health, dental clinic fixes bodies - News - ReviewJournal.com: Time after time, the school nurse refers pain-stricken children to a doctor or dentist but doubts their parents will take them.

"Many times, they don't," said Ellen Bordinhao, principal of Wynn Elementary School in a central Las Vegas neighborhood where 90 percent of students live in poverty and many are uninsured.

Dentist Steve DeLisle sees the proof of neglect in the gaping jaws of young patients.

"I've seen full-mouth decay," he said. "All 20 teeth with cavities."

He fixes all the cavities at once, putting patients under because the hours of drilling would traumatize children, who wouldn't have come to him if it weren't free.

Grand Rapids Dental Needs Great despite fluoridation

Grand Rapids was the first city to add fluoride chemicals into their residents via the water supply to stop tooth decay. Fluoridation began in Grand Rapids in 1945.  Today it's reported that dental needs are great.

One-day clinic provides free dental care to seniors | MLive.com: “We are looking for more dentist, hygienists and great partners, like the Grand Rapids Community College Dental Clinic, to volunteer their services and expertise for events like this,” Kropiewnicki said. “There is a big need in our community and we are hopeful that volunteers will step up so we can expand these events and serve more seniors.”

Only about 20 percent of dentists accept Medicaid, so it is difficult to find ones accepting new patients, agency officials said.
“This population we are serving at Senior Dental Day often has complex dental issues due to the fact that they haven’t been to a dentist in some time and we needed to be sure they were preforming the necessary care ahead of time,” said event organizer Nancy Kropiewnicki.

Cost, lack of dentists bar Va. residents from dental care | Richmond Times-Dispatch

Cost, lack of dentists bar Va. residents from dental care | Richmond Times-Dispatch
Despite being 96% fluoridated, many Virginians don't have access to dental care because of costs and a lack of dentists, according to a new study by two University of Virginia economists.

Cost is the greatest barrier. Those least likely to visit a dentist are low-income residents without insurance or who have low-cost public health care. Virginia's Medicaid program generally limits dental care for low-income adults to emergency services, the study said.

There also are racial and geographical disparities in access to care.

Those who couldn’t be seen Friday would be given vouchers to put them at the front of the line today, when the effort continues from 6 a.m.-3 p.m. Another 600 should be able to get dental care today.  At the group’s Dental Access Days in Florence last summer, they had to turn away about 2,000 people.

Sherwood, Illinois, kids teeth are rotting despite fluoridation

Sweet tooth trouble: More cavities being seen in younger kids - Joliet Herald News

Fluoridation is state mandated in Illinois. Dr. Gina Mueller, a Shorewood dentist, said she’s not surprised when she sees young children coming in her office with six or eight or even a dozen cavities. It seems like the past few years, she said, it’s becoming more common for toddlers to develop a mouth-ful of cavities even before their first dental checkup.

“It’s almost more surprising to see a kid without cavities,” she said.
Her fellow dentists at Shorewood Family Dental Center say they are observing the same trend, and they are not alone.

Kids' Teeth Rotting in fluoridated Lebanon, New Hampshire

Valley News ~ Full Story: [fluoridated] Lebanon, NH -- When Dr. Dianna Baker tells kids to open up and say “ah,” she's rarely surprised to see at least one rotting tooth.

Often, it's worse. She's seen children, most of them under the age of 5, who needed general anesthesia before getting teeth pulled. She's seen kids go to the hospital emergency room because their mouths were causing them so much pain.

Baker isn't a dentist; she's a pediatric resident at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center. But the problems she's seen in her patients’ mouths have convinced her that oral health cannot be left to the dentistry profession alone to address.
